It has emerged that Hindustan Motors plans to launch a hatchback version of the Ambassador that has been on sale in our market since. . err. . forever. The Ambassador hatchback will be underpinned by the sedan’s platform and would be launched in late 2014/early 2015.
The Ambassador hatchback will be manufactured in HM’s Uttarpara factory in West Bengal and might not be sold under the Ambassador moniker. Not much is known about the upcoming hatchback but safely expect the car to get BS4 emissions norms compliant diesel engine. Also, the car would get small displacement engines to enable it to get excise duty benefits. This would, inturn, enable the manufacturer to price the car ultra competitively. Also on the pipeline is a compact sedan variant of the Ambassador sedan. The Ambassador CS will be launched before the end of 2014 and would too benefit from concessions in excise duties. It is expected that the BS4 compliant diesel engines would boost the sales of the Grandpa’s car.
What do you feel? Will the Ambassador CS and hatchback body variants do any good to the ailing car maker?
