General Motors India to Hike Vehicle Prices from June 2013

Chevrolet Enjoy Review (28)

It has emerged that General Motors India has decided to increase the prices of its vehicle from the first week of June. Commenting on the price increase, Mr. P Balendran, Vice President, General Motors India, said: “We have decided to increase the prices of all our vehicles upto Rs.10,000 depending upon the model with effect from the Ist week of June on account of increase in transportation costs/logistics due to hike in diesel price. In percentage terms, the increase goes up to 1.5 per cent depending on the model,” said P Balendran, Vice President, General Motors India.

It may be noted that the Indian subsidiary of the American car maker giant was recently seen pricing its Enjoy MPV very competitively. The low price, along with spacious interiors and powerful engines, makes the Enjoy a really value for money proposition. It now remains to be seen if the marginal increase in price would affect the sales of Enjoy and that of the other GM India cars in any manner.

This can adversely affect GMs margins again – they increase the prices even before some of their products are testing the waters and later offer huge discounts. Look at the MoM and YoY sales published by some of the automobile sites and then I am sure car makers get jitters about the way they can clear the inventory. I feel this is a ‘daringly’ wrong move.
