General Motors India today launched the new Chevrolet SAIL hatchback and sedan. The SAIL hatchback is priced between Rs 4.63 and Rs 7. 14 lakh and the SAIL sedan is priced between Rs 5.45 and Rs 8.02 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai).

Originally introduced in 2012, the SAIL is built on a global passenger car platform that was created especially for India and other fast-growing emerging markets.
In a bid to move upmarket, the new SAIL’s interiors get new leatherette upholstery for the seats, a black and beige dual-tone color scheme with highlights in silver and chrome, new Icy blue illumination, new chrome surrounds for the AC vent bezel and HVAC control knobs along with silver surrounds for door handles. Chevrolet says that the Sail can ferry five adults in comfort due to the short front and rear overhangs along with the fuel tank’s position in the middle of the car- all of which maximise interior space and provide ample legroom for passengers in back. Entertainment is taken care of by the new 2 – DIN music system has Bluetooth® functionality. It supports up to five phone pairings and music streaming.
Exterior embellishments include new “shooting star” style front fog lamps with chrome garnish surrounds, blacked out side window surrounds and a chrome strip on the boot-lid. The SAIL is available in six exterior colours: Velvet Red (Sedan only), Super Red (Hatchback only), Switchblade Silver, Summit White, Caviar Black, Linen Beige and Sandrift Grey.
The 1.3 -litre SDE SMARTECH turbo-charged common rail diesel engine delivers power of 75 PS @ 4,000 rpm and torque of 190 Nm @ 1,750 rpm along with fuel economy of 22.1 km/l. The SAIL diesels are matched with a F17 transmission.
The locally developed 1.2 -litre SMARTECH petrol engine delivers power of 83.6 PS @ 6000 rpm and torque of 108.5 NM @ 5000 rpm along with a fuel economy of 18.2 kmpl.
Improved Ride and Handling
The SAIL’s steering, suspension and braking systems have been finely tuned to deliver taut, tight handling, which enhances road feedback and connectivity with the driver. NVH levels have been worked upon as well.
The three-point structure is capable of dispersing 80 per cent of the force in a front impact. It also prevents intrusion into the cabin. The fuel tank is protected by steel beam-rolling ribs. Apart from all that, an engine immobilizer, central door locking, speed-sensitive automatic door locks and remote keyless entry enhance active safety. In addition, the SAIL is equipped with dual air bags, the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic brake force distribution (EBD).
