Ever dreamt of riding a Harley Davidson on some of the scenic, hilly roads in India but couldn’t afford one? The Uttarakhand State Transport Authority (STA) might have an answer to your problem. The authority recently granted licenses that would enable one to rent out motorcycles such as a Harley Davidson or a Royal Enfield.

Five private players who have got the license for the ‘Rent a Motorcycle Scheme’ are said to offer the motorcycles on a daily, weekly and even a monthly basis. The aim of the authority is to give a boost to the tourism in the state by providing a suitable option to visitors for travelling. The move will not only benefit tourists but also the locals who seem to be very keen to make the most of this scheme.

Certain conditions have been issued which a permit holder has to adhere to before they begin with the business. The applicant must have at least 5 motorcycles that have permits issued by the STA apart from a fitness certificate, a comprehensive insurance package and should have tax duly paid till date. Also, the permit holder should have a contact number that is available throughout the day as well as the night. The permit holder should also have the financial resource for the upkeep and maintenance of the bikes.

The motorcycles will be commercially registered although there is it still not clear what the rental charges would be and whether they would be uniform to all the permit holders. The licenses have been issued in cities such as Dehradun, Rishikesh, Mussoorie and Tehri. Renting motorcycles and scooters is a common practice seen in places such as Goa where a customer can rent a two-wheeler for as low as INR 200 per day.
