The Chevrolet Sail sedan, which is GM India’s lower C segment contender, is the car manufacturer’s latest attempt at getting a foothold in the very important entry level sedan market of India. The Sail is the logical successor to the Aveo sedan and is squarely aimed at the very popular Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire and the Honda Amaze.
However, unlike the Swift Dzire, the Sail sedan isn’t blessed with ‘Maruti peace of mind’. Nor does it ride on the success of its hatchback sibling. However, the Sail sedan comes with really spacious interiors and a long list of features. What the Sail sedan also has is a tried and tested diesel engine that also powers the Swift Dzire and hoards of other diesel cars in the upper B and lower C segments of our car market. It may be noted that the now defunct Aveo sedan was offered with only a petrol engine and this proved to be quite an Achilles heel for otherwise well sorted out car.
The Chevrolet Sail sedan was launched at a very attractive price tag, offering real value for money and of course, a diesel engine option.
However, it seems like the low price tag hasn’t been of much help to Chevrolet India. Now, in what seems to be a bid to give the car a shot in its arm, the carmaker has further reduced the price of its latest sedan.
The Chevrolet Sail sedan, which until recently had at a starting price of INR 4.99 lakhs (ex showroom, Delhi), has got a meaty INR 40,000 worth of price cut and has a new starting price figure of INR 4.59 lakhs only. Compared to the Swift Dzire, which benefits from lower excise duty thanks to its sub 4m length (the Sail measures more than 4m), the Sail is now almost INR 33000 cheaper.
It will be interesting to see if the Sail hatchback will now have a better showing on the sales chart.
