The upcoming BMW i8 looks poised to become the Bavarian car maker’s contender in the fast emerging hybrid supercar market. What you see here in the lead image is a heavily camouflaged test mule of the production spec BMW i8 that has been spotted testing again, just few days after it was spotted testing in Las Vegas.

The pic does reveal a few things about the exterior styling of BMW. While the test mule has been given a heavy dose of camouflage, we have been able to make out that the car stays true to the i8 concept that we saw earlier. The i8 concept was showcased at Frankfurt a couple of year back and also made an appearance in the Mission Impossible 4.

Powering the production spec BMW i8 could be a three-cylinder turbocharged engine along with an electric motor that is located on the front axle. The three pot motor has a max power output of 223 horsepower and a peak torque figure of 300Nm. The electric motor has a max power output of 129 horsepower.

BMW claims that the fuel efficiency of the upcoming hybrid supercar is powertrain is close to 33.3 kmpl and the i8 can dismiss 100kmph from standstill in under five seconds.

The i8, in all probability, would propel the popular German carmaker back into the supercar scene. The i8 might also donate a lot of bits to the speculated BMW M8, if and when the latter sees the light of the day.

The BMW i8 might be launched sometime next year. Stay tuned for more details.
