Baja Auto organized a press conference today, discussing how the company has fared in the year 2015. As the Indian two-wheeler maker is giving the Auto Expo a skip this year, it took the opportunity to brief the media about its accomplishments in the year gone by through this press-con. During the media event, the company emphasized that it is keen on further enhancing its presence in the entry level and sport segment, which it has managed to do well in. In that context, the company also highlighted that it sees a gap between its Discover and Pulsar model line-ups and wishes to fill that vacuum with a new brand which will soon be announced.

The new brand, described as X (for reference’s sake) by the Bajaj officials, will be introduced in January 2016 itself and will help the Chakan based bike maker further strengthen its overall market share. The new model will cater to a customer which is internally referred to as ‘Executive-Mature’ hinting at a customer who might be looking at a nice balance between performance and economy but not exactly a sporty character. To give the model a shape, we can think of the previous gen Unicorn as a template – a 150cc motorcycle which is reasonably powerful, yet efficient and featuring balanced, conservative looks. So expect a similar motorcycle, albeit with a lower price tag to appeal to a wider audience.
While Bajaj Auto is widely identified among the enthusiasts as the maker of Pulsar brand of sporty motorcycles, the company seems extremely keen on expanding its presence in the entry and executive segments. So while sport segment is a priority for the brand, according to today’s press conference the company won’t be venturing into the premium 2+ lakh sport bike segment this year. A bike in the S2 segment, which is between 1-2 lakh will be launched this year though.
The absence at the Expo and the focus on the volume segments means that the Pulsar CS / RS 400 may not be launched this year also, which would be sad. Nothing can be said concretely yet, though, as the company sure has developed the motorcycle to a working prototype level.
