All you need to know: Piaggio Vespa VX 125

With inputs from Rohan Patil

We have always had good things to say about the Piaggio Vespa, which comes to us with a decently powerful motor and dallops of retro styling.

The Piaggio Vespa LX 125 made a lot of news when it was first launched in India, more for its premium positioning than for that very tasty bodywork. The high price tag ensued that the Vespa could never become a volume seller for Piaggio India and it won’t be wrong to say that the decidedly cool retro styling has failed to convince people to put their money on the much publicized scooter.

The Indian division of the famed Italian bike maker did resort to price cuts for the Vespa towards the beginning of this year but unfortunately, sales haven’t yet picked up.

Much of this can be attributed to the fact that while the Piaggio Vespa LX125 is now only a little dearer than other automatic scooters, it misses out on features like a front disc brake.

Piaggio India has surely taken notice of this and has launched the Vespa VX 125, which comes with more equipment and features.

The new variant boasts of a 200mm front disc brake, MRF Zapper tubeless tires, two new paint options (that of Vibrant Rosa and Metallic Green) and a new grab rail. Another little visual upgrade is the beige seat option with Rosso Dragon and Midnight Blue paint options. (We can already picture a few Vespas with untidy looking seats).

Mechanically, the Vespa VX remains unchanged and continues to be powered by the same 125cc, four stroke, 3-valve single cylinder engine that has a max power output of 10.06PS@7,500rpm and peak torque of 10.6Nm@6,000rpm. The motor comes mated to a CVT transmission. The scooter features monocoque chassis and linked suspension at front and single-sided suspension at rear.

The addition of all these features has made Vespa the highest priced scooter in the country, with a sticker price of INR 71,380 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Many of you might argue that similar amount can get you a well sorted out geared motorcycle but all we have to say is that you get all the contemporary features and a healthy dosage of retro styling with the Vespa, something we feel those who are aware of the Vespa lineage will appreciate.
