Volkswagen recently introduced us to the Golf GTi Clubsport. Now though, it’s the turn of a new bad boy from the Golf stable. This one’s called the Volkswagen Golf R400 and that ‘400’ bit is important. You see, what ze Germans have done, is take a 300 horsepower Golf R, and then whip the engine till it screams out another 100 ponies. So the upcoming Volkswagen Golf R400 will produce at least 400 horsepower (give or take a few hp).

Post its appearance at Beijing, VW gave the R400 project the “go ahead” and the above test mule is a testament to that. We know this hot hatch will make at least 400 PS of power, but the engine that makes this power remains a mystery. Some suggest that the Golf R400 will source its power from a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol unit. The other possibility is that of a 2.5-litre TFSI motor. Either way, this blue prototype shows how the production car will look like. Large alloy wheels, equally large drilled discs, very low profile tyres, front lip spoiler, roof-mounted rear spoiler and a rear diffuser.

That rear spoiler and diffuser look like they mean business! Four tailpipes… Sure thing.

To tame all those horses, the Volkswagen Golf R400 will feature the 4Motion AWD system. Power to those big wheels will be channeled via a dual-clutch DSG transmission. According to VW, the R400 Concept could hit 100 km/h in under 4 seconds and go on to 280 km/h. Mind you, if these numbers turn out to be true, this Volkswagen hatchback could thrash a Porsche 911 Carrera! Of course, we need to wait a little bit more before the carmaker announces this Golf R400’s details.
