2012 Hyundai Sonata YF

Hyundai is ready with its new Sonata (or the Sonata YF) in a bid to establish itself as a maker of bigger, costlier cars. Traditionally known as a small car maker in India, Hyundai has met great success with its Fluidic Verna. The Verna may not exactly be a very expensive car, but it surely has set the volumes soaring for the carmaker in the C-segment. The big and pricey Santa Fe, which is imported here as a CBU isn’t doing badly either. Seems like the Korean carmaker is all geared to taste some success in the D-segment locking horns with the likes of the Honda Accord, VW Passat and the Skoda Superb with its Sonata sedan.

Highly acclaimed across the world, especially in the US, the Sonata has won many accolades and is a hot seller in the US market. The list of its USPs includes sexy looks, a liberal features list, and a price tag (in the US) which is extremely competitive. The online brochure of the car throws light on the features and engine specifications of the car for the Indian market.

Hyundai Sonata India Specs

The Sonata for India employs a 2.4 liter direct injection GDI petrol engine with dual continuously variable valve timing tech. Transmission duties can be handled by a manual or automatic 6-speed unit, based on your choice. Peak power output for the engine is rated at an impressive 201PS at 6300 rpm. Peak torque is rated at 250Nm @ 4250 rpm, good enough for a petrol engine, but not quite in the league of a turbocharged diesel mill. Talking of diesel mills, the new Sonata will not have a diesel option, which in our opinion isn’t a very good thing for the sales of a car in India with its bizarre differential pricing for petrol and diesel fuels.

The new Sonata is shorter and narrower than the Accord, but is longer than the Superb, though narrower again. It’s loaded with features though, and should impress the prospective customers if priced right. The detailed specification sheet and features list is available as a high res image in the gallery at the end of the article.
