Mercedes Benz India to launch two new SUVs in near future

Mercedes-Benz has been rapidly losing out to newer but potent rivals BMW and Audi, who have managed to overtake MB, the first German luxury car maker to step into Indian car market. Industry watchers say that all this can be contributed to Mercedes having no entry level SUV in its portfolio to battle against high selling BMW X1 and Audi Q3.

However, a report from ACI says that all this is looking set to change with Mercedes Benz readying two new SUVs for the highly competitive Indian car market.

One of these two will be the yet to be unveiled GLA Class to take on the likes of X1 and Q3. The GLA is based on the highly publicised MFA front-wheel-drive transverse-engine platform. The new SUV will borrow design cues from the new A Class for exterior styling and will come with spacious and feature loaded interiors.

The GLA will be both longer and wider than the A and B Class but with similar powerplants. The new Compact SUV should come with a base price of about INR 23 lakhs.

The second of the two upcoming SUVs is the new GLK. The new gen GLK will be out in 2015 and safely expect MB to develop a right hand drive version of the new SUV. A RHD version of current GLK never saw the light of the day due to engineering constraints with the front driveshaft of the car. The second-generation model (codename X205), which is sure to come to us, has a longer & wider wheelbase and will sport a four-wheel drive mechanism.

It will be interesting to see if these two SUVs can change the scenario at Indian luxury car market.
