Although cop cars elsewhere have been using them for ages, the Delhi Traffic Police has realized the importance of modernization only now. After having installed a dash cam in his car recently, Delhi Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Muktesh Chander has managed to catch and fine more than 500 people so far, for different kinds of traffic violations. Calling it a better way to record evidence of the offence, the camera in his car is connected to a GPS system that provides other necessary data such as location, speed, date and time. The dash cam has an auto recording facility which helps in recalling events.
Lauding the technology further, he explains that the camera has the ability to change focus and target any specific vehicle the officer in the car wishes to. Once the offender is caught on camera, a team analyses the feed and sends a notice to the vehicle owner on basis of the car’s registration number. So impressed is the Commissioner with the gadget, he wants every car used in the traffic department to be installed with a dash cam and has already asked his officers to get one fitted. If you’ve been wondering that all of those 500 offenders must be unsuspecting common citizens, here’s the surprise. A Delhi Transport Corporation bus was caught on camera polluting the air badly, acting on the video feed, the traffic department not just issued them a challan, but also shared the footage as evidence for DTC to take some action.
