The vehicle was recently purchased by a friend of the accused. Amin, who is 46 years old, a contractor who owns about 250 clean up vehicles used by the BMC, was drunk at the time of the accident although the same could not be independently confirmed. He was later arrested by the Pydhonie police and taken into custody at approximately 4 A.M, nearly 4 hours after the accident occurred. The accused reportedly fled from the spot fearing mob fury.

The victims were rushed to JJ hospital where 4 of them were discharged after primary medication while the 5th victim has been kept at the hospital due to the seriousness of the injuries. Some reports suggest that the victims were sitting and talking near the divider while a few reports suggested that the victims were daily wage workers who used to sleep on the pavement. Had it not been for the car it hit earlier, the accident could have seen one or more casualties.

Shaikh was booked under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC and these offences seem to be bailable at the first glance.
