The highlight of the 2015 Volkswagen Vento Konekt variant happens to be the Blaupunkt sourced 7”- touchscreen multimedia head unit in the center console that also supports navigation. Priced at Rs 45,000 in the open market, it incorporates a DVD/CD player, supports Bluetooth streaming, USB and SD card input. You may also connect your iPod or an iPhone and charge them via USB. Fiddling around with the unit, we figured that controls are easily accessible to the driver, even while on the move, as the unit has been slightly tilted towards the driver and the additional buttons that surround the system makes it even easier. While we weren’t able to test video playback via a DVD, the touch sensitivity on the unit, although not as smooth as your premium phone, remains acceptable, without much lag between inputs. Sound quality is good if you aren’t an extreme audiophile, and even with the volume turned up all the way, there is little or no distortion experienced. Bass levels aren’t deep enough to send shivers down the chassis, but the sound quality can be best described as mature. Radio reception is strong, we even managed to receive a decent signal in our basement parking lot. What the Vento does miss out on is a rear parking camera, although sensors do their best to tell you how far back you can travel in reverse.

The Rear seat Tablet:

For the rear occupants, VW has equipped the Vento Konekt with an 8” android tablet that is available only for one of the passengers on the rear bench. The other occupant may try peeping, but the limited viewing angle ensures what you do with that tablet remains a private show. Good or bad? You decide. Power for the tablet comes from a charging cable that runs all the way from the 12V socket ahead of the DSG shifter, tries to hide underneath the rear AC vent, and then climbs into the front seat back rest to finally emerge near the head rest.

Talking about the tablet itself, it carries a VW launcher that is plastered with widgets for various apps. The device will connect to a wifi hotspot, which could be your phone or any other source. It will then use that data to either stream 16 mainstream television channels, including cartoons for your kids and the religious kinds for your mother, lets you listen to Internet Radio, has a browser that lets you browse through any sites, a youtube app that plays your favorite videos, and a widget on the home screen that tells you about the weather and shows feeds from the stock market. It also has a front camera that lets you see your own face or you may use it for video calling. The tablet has a section for social media apps that keep you connected to your million virtual friends, and just in case if the car requires some attention, it will tell you where the nearest dealer is located and takes you there with the help of a map.
