VW Cars To Get Expensive; Jan 2023 Price Hike

German brands are the top luxury carmakers around the world, and it is no different in India. Another German car manufacturer with a huge fan following in the country is Volkswagen. This brand isn’t known for its premium luxury or posh interiors but for its solid build quality, performance, driving dynamics, and most importantly, affordability. Acclaimed as the ‘People’s car’, Volkswagen is known around the globe for bringing German quality to the masses.

However, the irony is that Volkswagen has always charged a premium for its products over other rival brands in India. And now, to rub salt over the wounds, the company has announced plans to hike prices across its model range.

Why The Hike?

The new, raised prices are to come into effect from January 2023. The carmaker holds rising commodity prices and looming regulations responsible for the increased costs. VW asserts that it has been absorbing most of the rising input costs and wishes to partially offset the blow. Hence, this price hike.

The price hike will come into force across the entire Volkswagen model range in India which mainly comprises three models. The brand currently retails its Tiguan mid-size SUV, Taigun compact SUV, and Virtus mid-size sedan in the country. Notably, the automaker had recently launched an Exclusive Edition of the Tiguan with slight cosmetic differences and no additional cost.

Volkswagen currently has a strong network of 157 sales touchpoints across 117 cities in India.

Other OEMs Announcing Bump In Prices

The German carmaker isn’t the only major OEM to raise prices as a slew of other mass-market auto manufacturers like Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Kia, Tata, Renault, MG, Jeep & Citroen as well as luxury automakers such as BMW, Volvo, Audi & Mercedes-Benz have also announced hiked prices in India. OEMs are citing the common reason behind this move being the increase in commodity and raw material costs caused by global inflation.

This row of price hikes in the country isn’t limited to just four-wheeler manufacturers as even two-wheeler giants like TVS Motor and Hero MotoCorp

have indicated price increases in the majority of their offerings. OEMs are citing the common reason behind this move being the increase in commodity and raw material costs caused by global inflation.
