In what is believed to be the worst accident of the year in Kolkata, 3 people were killed and about 20 other injured after a car broke a signal and rammed into a few bikes and pedestrians. The incident occurred at 1:45 pm on the Delvedere Road-AJC Bose Road near the Police Training School.
A Volkswagen Jetta being driven by Saroj Kumar Banik reportedly jumped a red signal and rammed into two bikes and later went on to hit a group of pedestrians waiting to cross the road before coming to a halt. The pedestrians, most of which were children, had come to visit the Alipore Zoo nearby. The mishap resulted in the death of three people, a 12 year –old girl and two citizens riding on their respective motorcycles. The accident also left 20 more pedestrians injured, seven of which are said to be in a serious condition.

Reports suggest that the police have registered a case of murder and attempt to murder against the driver of the Jetta at Hastings police station. The case was later transferred to the fatal section of the Kolkata traffic police for further investigation. Although unconfirmed, a few reports suggested that Saroj Banik, who was at the wheel of the sedan, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the mishap.
