What could possibly become India’s fastest and most powerful hatchback for a long time to come, has been spotted in Pune. We’re talking about the highly anticipated Volkswagen Polo GTI, the pocket sized mayhem that’ll be launched in India later this year, mostly during the festive period.

Under the hood of the Polo GTI is a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder petrol engine with Volkswagen’s TSI engine technology which combines direct gasoline injection with turbocharging, and produces 192 PS of power. Until now, we were convinced that in the Indian version, power would sent to the front wheels via a 7 – speed DSG transmission. However, we’re pleasantly surprised to report that the purist’s choice – a 6-speed manual transmission would also be available in the country.

The spy image of the interiors show the stubby gear lever nestled between the lovely, chequed cloth upholstered seats. What’s more, maximum torque stands at 320 Nm between 1450 and 4500 rpm if one opts for the six-speed manual transmission, whereas the DSG transmission calls for a considerably less 250 Nm, available between 1250 and 5300 rpm.

That doesn’t mean that the DSG-equipped version is a slouch, as it sprints from 0-100 kph in just 6.7 seconds, which will make it the quickest accelerating hatchback in the country. With a rated top speed of 236 kph, it will also be the fastest hatchback in the country. The Polo GTI’s sports tuned suspension sits 10 mm lower at the front and 15 mm lower at the rear as compared to the stock Polo. The GTI also gets a completely new electro-mechanical steering system, and an optional Sport Performance Kit, which brings in a set of electronically adjustable dampers along with a Sport button.

The India-spec Polo GTI will ride on smaller 15-inch rims, as opposed to the 16-inch rollers on international variants.

Further electronic aids come in the form of electronic stability control (ESC) system and a XDS+ torque-vectoring system. The Polo GTI can be externally differentiated by the red GTI insignia, distinctive side sills and GTI- specific rear spoiler. As for safety, the Polo GTI comes fitted with ABS, ESP & Hill-hold functions and airbags as standard features. Furthermore, the Volkswagen Polo GTI engine comes equipped with the capability of delivering EU 6 emissions norms.
