One of the prominent Japanese carmakers, Toyota has revealed the all-new Yaris Cross SUV. Previously, it was previewed as the Urban Cruiser icon and it will be launched first in Indonesia. However, this ASEAN spec Yaris Cross is different from its European version and the version sold in other markets.

Platform and rivals of Toyota Yaris Cross

The new Toyota Yaris Cross is based on the new DNGA platform which is a low-cost derivative of the TNGA architecture. The DNGA platform shares its underpinnings with plenty of ASEAN market cars including the Yaris sedan, Avanza MPV and Raize SUV.

Toyota has slated the Yaris Cross above the Raize SUV in its portfolio. The Yaris Cross will directly take on the Hyundai Creta in the markets such as Indonesia. The Yaris Cross boasts a length of 4,310mm, slightly surpassing that of the Creta. Its wheelbase stands at 2,620mm, outperforming the Creta by 10mm.

Meanwhile, the rear fascia of the SUV boasts an angular design with sharp looking LED taillights and a flat tailgate.

Engine of Toyota Yaris Cross

What’s under the hood?

Underneath the hood of this SUV lies a 1.5L 4-cylinder 2NR-VE Naturally Aspirated Petrol engine. This engine produces 104hp of power and 138nm of torque output. However, Toyota also offers a 1.5L 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain option as well.

Although, the maker hasn’t revealed the combined output, yet the petrol engine churns out 90hp and 121nm of output. Meanwhile, the electric motor of a hybrid powerplant makes 79hp and 141nm of output mated to an e-CVT gearbox.

About India launch

Although, Toyota is accentuating its joint venture with Suzuki for local manufacturing, sales and exports in India. Yet, the Yaris Cross shares a lot of elements with Daihatsu models sold in other ASEAN countries. So, it is unlikely that Toyota will introduce Yaris Cross in the Indian market.

However, Toyota already has a Creta rival in the Indian market known as the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The Hyryder still has decent sales in the market and shares its elements with Maruti Grand Vitara. Furthermore, Toyota is gearing up to fulfil the rising demand for Innova Hycross and Innova Crysta.
