The Tata Nexon has been one of those SUVs that has found a place in many Indian homes. It is known for its strong safety, practical cabin and everyday usability. Now, the same SUV is getting a fresh identity for a new market. Tata Motors has confirmed that the Nexon will be sold in South Africa as the Tata Osprey, with its launch planned for the third quarter of 2026.
This will become Tata Motors’ fifth passenger vehicle in South Africa. The company currently sells the Tiago, Punch, Curvv and Harrier there. Adding the Osprey will further expand its SUV lineup.
Why The Name Osprey?
The SUV is mechanically the Tata Nexon, but South African buyers will see it with a different badge.
Tata says the name Osprey comes from the bird of prey found in parts of South Africa. The new name has been selected to give the SUV a stronger local identity without changing the product itself.
The Nexon has already crossed one million customers globally. It has also been among India’s highest selling passenger vehicles over the years.
Safety Continues To Take the Spotlight
One of the biggest strengths of the Tata Osprey will be its safety package. Some key points include:

Tata Expands Its Presence
Tata Motors returned to the South African passenger vehicle market after a gap of six years. The company has been adding new models step by step, and the Osprey will strengthen its portfolio further.
Passenger vehicle exports are also showing good growth. Tata exported around 700 passenger vehicles in June 2026, recording a 45 percent year on year increase. The addition of the Osprey could support this growth in overseas markets.
