Tata Motors has taken a big step towards its next generation of electric vehicles. For the very first time, the upcoming Tata Avinya electric SUV has been spotted testing on Indian roads. Although the test vehicle is covered in heavy camouflage, it still gives a good idea of what Tata is preparing for the premium EV space.
Unlike the brand’s current electric SUVs, the Avinya will sit at the top of Tata’s EV portfolio. The latest spy shots suggest that development is moving ahead steadily, with the production version expected to arrive in 2027.
Premium proportions stand out
Even with the camouflage hiding most of the styling, the overall shape looks quite different from Tata’s existing SUVs.

- Long wheelbase for better cabin space
- Short front overhang
- Smooth roofline flowing towards the rear
- Flush fitting door handles
- Large aerodynamic alloy wheels
- Thick body cladding
- Conventional door mounted ORVMs

The front section appears to have a closed grille, which is common on modern electric vehicles. Vertical lighting elements can also be seen near the bumper, while slim daytime running lights are likely hidden beneath the camouflage.
The long rear doors also hint that passenger space could be one of the strong points of the upcoming SUV.

New platform for the Avinya family
Tata Motors has also changed its original plans for the Avinya project.
Earlier, the company was expected to use Jaguar Land Rover’s EMA platform. Now, Tata has confirmed that the first Avinya model will be built on the Freelander platform developed through the Chery JLR partnership.
Even though the platform comes from CJLR, Tata will develop its own design, software, electronics and engineering for the production model. Manufacturing is expected to take place at the new TMPV JLR facility in Panapakkam, Tamil Nadu.
Battery pack and launch details
Official specifications have not been announced yet. However, reports suggest the Avinya X could be offered with battery packs ranging from 65 kWh to 80 kWh.
The SUV is expected to offer strong driving range along with performance suitable for buyers looking at premium electric vehicles. Tata is also planning more than one model under the Avinya name, with larger electric SUVs likely to join the range later.
