Skoda Unveils New MQB A0 37 Platform for India

Skoda Auto India is diving into the realms of a cutting-edge MQB A0 37 modular platform for the Indian automotive market

The all-new platform is emerging as a potential game-changer, poised to complement the existing MQB A0 IN architecture that currently forms the backbone of the India 2.0 models for both Skoda and Volkswagen.

Decoding the MQB A0 37 Platform

The MQB A0 37 is a specially tailored modular framework designed to cater to emerging markets like India and South America.

With a focus on large-scale localization, Skoda aims to elevate the driving experience by ensuring adaptability to the unique needs of these regions. Currently in the exploration phase, the platform is expected to make its debut post the completion of the India 2.5 project.

During a recent interaction, Klaus Zellmer, the global CEO of Skoda Auto, emphasized the urgency of deciding on a new platform beyond the existing one used for models like the Kushaq and Slavia. The MQB A0 37 platform is under consideration not only for India but also for deployment in Latin America and South America.

Advantages of the MQB A0 37 for India

Skoda Auto is meticulously studying the MQB A0 37 architecture, envisioning a shift to more expansive and technologically advanced vehicles catering to the evolving preferences of consumers.

This platform is anticipated to overcome the limitations of the current MQB A0 IN platform, known as MQB A0 27, particularly in terms of dimensions and accommodating advanced powertrain options, including petrol-hybrid configurations.

Skoda’s Forward Momentum

Looking beyond the India 2.5 project, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is gearing up for its next phase of investment. With a substantial budget of Euro 1 billion allocated for the India 2.0 project, Skoda is on the verge of introducing multiple projects or platforms to sustain its product-led momentum for the coming decade.

Twin Track Approach

Departing from the past parallel track approach, where Skoda and VW had products in similar market segments, the group is now adopting a twin-track strategy. Skoda will continue investing in internal combustion engine vehicle (ICE) architecture, while the parent brand Volkswagen focuses on electric vehicle (EV) architecture for the Indian market.

Future Prospects

As part of their future plans, the Volkswagen brand is gearing up to localize the MEB21G electric vehicle architecture. This move aims to enter the SUV EV market in India, dominated by local players like Tata Motors. Simultaneously, Skoda Auto is set to roll out its own EV under the Volkswagen brand, potentially hitting the roads by 2026.

Diverse Architectures for Future Vehicles

The roadmap for Skoda and Volkswagen’s future vehicles indicates a triad of architectures – MQB A0 27, MQB A0 37, and MEB21 G for electric vehicles. This strategic diversification not only ensures a comprehensive product lineup but also positions the brands to cater to a wide array of consumer preferences.
