After having launched the diesel variants of the Amaze and the City in India, the Honda CRV diesel will become the third diesel powered Honda car in the country.

The India spec CRV is currently powered by two petrol engines-

  • 2.0 liter producing 154 bhp and 19.3 kgm
  • 2.4 liter producing 187 bhp and 23.0 kgm

The diesel Honda CRV will be powered by an 1.6 liter oil burner, which will output 118 bhp and a healthy 30.5 kgm of torque.

But unlike the 2.4 liter petrol, which comes with four wheel drive, the diesel variant will come only in two wheel drive configuration. Lack of four wheel drive hardware will ensure weight savings of 70 kilos and hence decent performance. The weight saving will also aid fuel efficiency, which is already a USP of Honda Earth Dreams engine.

Honda will be producing this new engine locally at the new Rajasthan plant, which will enable the carmaker to price the car aggressively. It is expected that Honda CRV Diesel price in India will be pegged at INR 25 lakh.

Honda may also plonk into the upcoming Accord a more powerful version of this diesel engine, which would output 140-150 bhp. The Accord will give some nasty nightmares to the German diesel saloons, all thanks to its reliability and a diesel heart.
