Renault had launched the Kwid in September last year at an introductory price of Rs. 2.57 lakhs (Ex-Showroom, Delhi). The Kwid, which ticked all the right boxes for Renault, became an instant hit with customers. The hatchback achieved a feat that no other vehicle in the segment had ever done before, which was challenging Maruti Suzuki’s Alto.

Currently available with a 799cc engine, the Kwid was also set to arrive with a 1.0 litre variant as well as an AMT variant. Both the models were showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo and now spy images suggest that the former has been spied testing.

The test mule duo spotted in the city of Chennai, with the first one sporting the SCe tag which suggests that the model is powered by a 1.0 litre engine as opposed to the standard 800cc mill. The second test mule features alloy wheels as opposed to the conventional steel wheels but does not carry the SCe tag.

Rivals to the 1.0 litre Kwid would include the Maruti Suzuki Alto k10 and the Hyundai Eon 1.0L. With these spy images surfacing on the web, the launch doesn’t seem to be quite far. The AMT variant should also be in the making now so as to take on the Alto K10 AGS.

Currently powering the Kwid is a 799 cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces a power output of 51 hp and a peak torque of 72 Nm. This engine sends power to the wheels with the help of a 5 speed manual transmission.
