Renault and Mercedes Jointly Developing Next-gen K9K Engine

The emission norms keep getting tougher and the manufacturers all over the world are pushing themselves hard to adhere to the new norms by making their engine more efficient and have cleaner burning of the fossil fuels.

European Union’s emission norms for 2020 have already made manufacturers to start working on the future engines. It is being said that German biggie Mercedes Benz is all set to start the development of a range of eco-friendly four cylinder motors.

As per Mr. Jurgen Doring, head of powertrain strategy, Mercedes Benz feels that the upcoming four cylinder engines that are being jointly developed with Renault will be as efficient as BMW’s three cylinder engines. Also, having a four cylinder layout over BMW’s three cylinder will give the three pointed star an edge in terms of refinement.

It has emerged that Mercedes will make use of a new 1.5 litre oil burner for its future car. This is the same engine that will also find a home in many Renault cars of the future. The new 1.5 litre engine might very well be the next generation Renault K9K engine that powers some of the most popular cars today. It may be noted that the Renault K9K engine is one of the most popular small capacity diesel motors of recent times and powers a wide range of vehicles in varied states of tune. In India, the K9K diesel engine can be found under the hood of a wide range of vehicles from Nissan Micra to the Renault Fluence.
