NASA’s Apollo program, also known as the Apollo Mission, was the third United States human space-flight program. Between 1969 to 1972, the program marked humankind’s first footsteps on the lunar surface.
As a tribute to the feat, Ford has unveiled an one-off, specially prepared Mustang, which is set to go under the hammer at an auction on July 23 during the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in. All proceeds from the auction will benefit EAA youth education programs including the Young Eagles which has provided free introductory flights to more than 1.9 million young people since 1992.
The 2015 Ford Mustang Apollo Edition has an unique livery that reminisces the Apollo spacecraft which successfully flew to the moon and back, with men on board. The bodywork is finished in gloss white, while the hood, roof and boot-lid are all contrasted in gloss black. United States lettering & flags on the front fender, cherry red mirror caps complete the livery.
Aerodynamic enhancements include a carbon fibre front splitter up front along with a rear diffuser and spoiler, while LED under-body lights spice things up. Additional go-faster bits include a sport-tuned suspension and 21-inch Forgiato wheels which tease the new six-piston Brembo brakes.
Inside, there are black leather sport seats with white accents and red contrast stitching. The rear seats have also been removed by replaced by a leather cover that features prominent Apollo branding. The Mustang Apollo Edition also has special floor mats, a modified instrument cluster and unique sill plates – among other things.
Power comes from the standard 5.0-liter V8 engine, which has been fettled further with a Ford Performance supercharger and a sports exhaust system. Courtesy these modifications, peak power now stands at 627 bhp, while maximum torque is rated at 731 Nm.
