July 2013 Unveiling of the Nissan Datsun K2 B segment hatchback

We have reporting in detail about Nissan India’s plans to launch Datsun cars in India. It is by now a known fact that Datsun will be commencing its Indian innings with two hatchbacks for our highly competitive small car market. Christened as the I2 and K2, the two small cars will cater to A and B segment respectively.

It has today emerged that Carlos Ghosn, CEO, Renault-Nissan will unveil the K2 prototype in July 2013. The ‘made-for-India’ hatchback will be unveiled at New Delhi. We have been saying that the car would be launched in 2014 and the July 2013 unveiling of the prototype isn’t anything to be surprised of.

The K2 will also spawn out a 7 seat MPV at a later stage. The K2 MPV might debut as soon as in October 2013 and would first be launched in Indonesian market.

The I2 hatchback is expected to be launched in first quarter of 2014, i.e., around the same time as the K2. The I2 will battle it out against the very popular Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and might emerge as the bread and butter model for Renault-Nissan India. The I2, along with the K2, is being developed at Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre, near Chennai, India and is expected to be previewed at the 2014 New Delhi Auto Expo.
