New Renault Koleos spied in MPV Avatar

New Renault Koleos Spyshot

One might have seen SUVs being derived from MPV platforms, but in case of Renault it seems the opposite. The new Renault Koleos has been spotted spy testing and it might be surprising to see the existing SUV being rebadged into a multipurpose vehicle.

Renault had showcased the R Space Concept way back in 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show and the Koleos under testing looks a de-glamorized derivative. Based on the Renault Scenic, the new Koleos is expected to be displaced similar to the present generation vehicle, but would be powered by a new 2 litre turbocharged diesel common rail. The switch from an SUV to an MPV avatar would also see reduction in horsepower from 150 ps to 137 ps.

Renault’s sales charts are a testimony to the Koleos’ appalling numbers in global markets- for example in the UK, Renault sold only 2600 vehicles till it was discontinued. The SUV met with similar fate in India after its launch in September 2011. Only China has been an exception where the Koleos has met with reasonable success.

The objective of the transition from an SUV to an MPV is fed by the fact that people are looking for a more practical mover than a sporty styled vehicle at a much cheaper cost. This time Renault would be working alone on the Koleos unlike last time when it sought assistance of its Korean Arm Renault Samsung Motors.

The car is slated for launch anywhere between 2014 and 2015 and is claimed to possess decent off-roading capabilities.
