After the success of their Zest sedan, Tata Motors seems to be on the right path and are now moving back to their roots. It is no secret that the auto giant is developing two brand new 5 & 7-seater SUVs for the global market with inputs from Jaguar Land Rover. However, they haven’t forgotten their old friends at Fiat and according to a report, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Tata are working together to locally develop a 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine which will power the two new upcoming Tata SUVs and will also find its way in Fiat Chrysler’s new Compact SUV, to be marketed under the Jeep brand. All three vehicles are slated to hit the market around 2017.

According to the report, Tata will gain access to a new-generation turbo-charged diesel engine, which it can use to propel a variety of products in its line-up. The two new SUVs under development are codenamed ‘Q501’ and ‘Q502’, and will be sold in domestic as well as international markets. However, the new engine will make its debut in Fiat Chrysler’s C-segment SUV which will be sold with a ‘Jeep’ moniker and could see a global launch in India. Fiat stands to gain from such partnerships and the development of this new powertrain, as their cars, although great products, aren’t all the popular in India but their existing 1.3-litre multijet engine is also lovingly called the ‘National Engine’, for it powers a large number of hatchbacks and sedans manufactured by different car makers.
