We wish Mazda sets shop in India sometime soon, as the all-new Mazda2 Sedan, revealed just ahead of its debut in Thailand, would fit the Indian bill perfectly. For Europe, its main competitors are going to be the Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio and Nissan Almera, while in Asian markets, it’ll lock horns with the Honda City and the Hyundai Accent/Verna. If bought here and priced aggressively, it could give the aforementioned cars sleepless nights in India as well, but that’s not happening anytime soon.
The 2 looks paints a pretty picture, with its distinctive Mazda KODO themed styling that takes quite well to the compact proportions. A derivative of the 2 hatchback, the Sedan doesn’t come across as an after-thought, carrying its neatly integrated boot with style.
Depending on the market, power will come from a choice of either a new 1.5-liter diesel that Mazda has just introduced or different output versions of a 1.5-liter Skyactiv petrol engine. The interiors seems to suggest it will a floating screen on the dash, leather seats and fake carbon trim as on the hatchback, while a 6-speed automatic will also be made available.
Back to the Indian context, there’s no buzz from Mazda about their foray into our market, but we wish them the best and hope they do something about the situation quickly, as cars like beautiful 6 and the 2 are waiting to be lapped up by Indian buyers.
