Online taxi dispatch company Uber has joined hands with Mumbai Traffic Police against drunk driving by installing breathe analyzers kiosks called Breathalysers across the city. First of the several Breathalysers has already been installed in a nightclub in Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla.

The system measures the alcohol content and, if above the legal limit, sends a message on the screen of the kiosks requesting the person to book a ride home with Uber.

Speaking about the new initiative, Shailesh Sawlani, GM, Uber Mumbai said, “Through this campaign, we aim to build awareness against drunk-driving and give people a convenient and reliable ride back home. We hope to work with the Mumbai traffic police to install these devices across all bars and pubs in the city.”

In its earlier announcements, Uber had committed to invest $1 billion to ramp up operations and to invest heavily in safety measures for its riders.

Drink and drive is a serious and a punishable offence and this new system from Uber is a welcome move which should help reduce the incidents of drunk driving. Do you agree? What steps would you recommend to put a curb on drunk driving. Share your views with us through the comments section below.
