In a Bollywood flick inspired hustle, a con artist duped Bengaluru based Kumar Travels, a premium car rental company, by stealing five of their high-end vehicles including a Mercedes-Benz and a Land Rover. Moreover, the scamster also allegedly got five different RC cards from his “source” in the RTO and gave them to the potential owners before fleeing with their money. The movie inspired con-job was executed by Sachin Kumar who was recently arrested by Bengaluru police. However, the police could not keep him behind the bars for long and Kumar is already out on bail. Sachin Kumar is also named in a land scam, apart from several cases of fraud.

Sachin had earlier been working with a few travel agencies when he came to know about Kumar Travels. Before conning the car rental agency, Kumar gained the trust of the employees by renting various high end vehicles. He later took multiple cars such as a BMW 5 series and a Land Rover on rent and began defaulting on the payments. By the time the firm came to know about the scam, their Land Rover was on sale while the rest of their cars had already been sold.

Speaking to a local daily, Vinutha Kumar, one of the owners of Kumar Travels said, “He came to us in December 2013 and asked for a Mercedes for rent. We called his earlier employer for a background check and were told that Sachin had a business of his own and could be trusted. And, so, we gave him the car. He promptly paid the rent and returned the car after use.”

Sachin had originally come to the travel agency astride a top-end Harley-Davidson motorcycle, believed to be the CVO, which is worth INR 50 lakhs. To impress employees of the car renting agency he even displayed his photograph along with Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar. While the rental company has got three of its five cars back, the owner of the Land Rover has moved court as the vehicle was seized.

The criminal’s modus operandi was to take the vehicle to a source in the RTO who would prepare the fake documents. Once ready, he would forge the signatures of the owner before selling the car. For the Harley-Davidson, he allegedly got 5 different RC cards from the RTO and gave them to the potential owners before fleeing with theie money. Some of the victims are believed to be members of the local Harley-Davidson club.
