The Maruti Suzuki Celerio diesel is all set to show itself in our market and will hit dealerships this month. The Celerio diesel, once launched, will become the most affordable diesel-fueled car by Maruti Suzuki. Whereas the Chevrolet Beat diesel has a 936cc three-cylinder engine, the two-cylinder oil-burning heart of the Celerio is expected to displace just under 800cc. This tiny engine which may produce around 35 horses, has been developed in-house by the folks at Maruti Suzuki and is expected to be paired to a 5-speed manual tranny. We don’t expect an AMT version of the Celerio diesel, mainly to keep costs low.
The Celerio diesel will rival the Beat diesel from Chevrolet.
Kenichi Ayukawa, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki has made it official that this powertrain will deliver almost 30 km/l of fuel economy. Maruti Suzuki will initially commence the production of 100,000 units of this diesel engine, which might be upped in the future. Apart from the Celerio hatchback, this engine will also power the upcoming Y9T light pickup truck. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio diesel could hit showroom floors in June, possibly available in three variants (like with its petrol sibling). Though Petrol cars have gained some momentum recently, highly affordable and frugal diesel cars such as this Celerio, could change the tides in our market. However, only time will stand testament to that switch and this hatchback’s sales performance.
