Made-In-India Maruti Jimny, Fronx and e Vitara Hit Major Export Milestone

Maruti Suzuki has now crossed a new export mark, with more than 1 lakh units of the Jimny 5-door, Fronx and e Vitara shipped from India to Japanese customers.

Japan is Maruti Suzuki’s second-largest export market by volume for FY2025-26. The country has also held the same position during April to August of FY2026-27.

Three Models Drive The Milestone

The three vehicles joined Japan’s market at different times. Fronx was the first to make the trip in August 2024. The Jimny 5-door followed in December 2024. The e Vitara was added in September 2025.

The Jimny 5-door and e Vitara are made exclusively in India. The e Vitara is also Maruti Suzuki’s first battery electric vehicle.

This gives India a larger role in Suzuki’s international production network. Cars made at Maruti Suzuki’s plants are now reaching buyers in Suzuki’s home country as well.

Japan Becomes A Major Export Market

The export numbers have also changed Japan’s position in Maruti Suzuki’s overseas business. It was the company’s second-largest export market in FY2025-26 and has kept that spot during the first five months of the current financial year.

Suzuki also became Japan’s No. 1 vehicle importer during FY2025-26. Maruti Suzuki-built vehicles made up nearly all of Suzuki’s vehicle imports into Japan during that period.

That is notable because Japan has a large and established car manufacturing industry of its own.

India’s Export Numbers

Maruti Suzuki’s export business extends far beyond Japan. The company says it now supplies vehicles to nearly 120 countries.

Between April and August of FY2026-27, Maruti Suzuki exported more than 1.8 lakh vehicles. It has also been India’s largest passenger vehicle exporter from FY2021-22 through FY2025-26.

The company says it accounted for more than half of India’s passenger vehicle exports during this period.

Strong Showing In July

Several Maruti Suzuki models also featured among India’s top car exports in July 2026.

  • Jimny: 5,784 units
  • Fronx: 4,570 units
  • e Vitara: 2,524 units
  • Other exported models included Dzire, Swift, Ertiga, Baleno and Celerio

The July numbers show that the export mix is not limited to one particular type of vehicle. Petrol models and the newer electric e Vitara are both part of the international line-up.

A Different India-Japan Link

Maruti Suzuki MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the milestone shows acceptance of India-made vehicles among Japanese buyers. He also pointed to the long history between Suzuki and India.

Suzuki originally entered India to build vehicles for the local market. Today, vehicles produced here are being shipped back to Suzuki’s home market.
