The successful launch of the Indian Design Mark developed by the India Design Council, was amongst the top ten items mentioned in the joint statement issued by India and Japan following the visit by Prime Minister of India HE Dr. Manmohan Singh to Japan recently to strengthen the strategic and global partnership between the two countries, while also marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Japan.

Dr. Singh was on an official working visit to Japan for the annual summit of the Prime Ministers at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Mr. Shinzo Abe, to hold extensive talks on bilateral, regional and global issues. The two Prime Ministers expressed satisfaction with the progress made in cooperation among the creative industries of the two countries. The fact that the India Design Mark found mention in the joint statement demonstrates the commitment that both India and Japan have in this area.

The India Design Council (IDC), presided over by Mr. Anand Mahindra Chairman, Mahindra Group, has launched the Indian Design Mark, which is a design standard, a symbol, which recognizes good design. The IDC grants the India Design Mark after evaluating good designs through a systemized process. The Mark was initiated in cooperation with the Good Design Award, Japan and communicates that the product is usable, durable, aesthetically appealing and socially responsible.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group said, “Innovative and aesthetic design is increasingly critical in achieving success both domestically and in the global marketplace. The India Design Mark symbolizes excellence in form, function, quality, safety, sustainability and innovation. I am deeply gratified that it has received this prestigious recognition at the highest levels of government in both India and Japan.”

“The India Design Mark will increase the awareness of good product design in India. This mention in the joint statement by India and Japan gives an added impetus to the efforts of the Indian Design Council. We shall work with renewed vigour to popularize the India Design Mark across the country.” added Prof. Pradyumna Vyas, Director of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad
