Hyundai Santro drives into the Sunset after standing tall for 16 years

When it was first launched in September 1998, the Hyundai Santro single-handedly propelled the Korean car maker to become the second largest automobile manufacturer and the largest automobile exporter in India. However, after spending 16 popular years on Indian roads, the last Hyundai Santro rolled off the car maker’s production facility in Chennai in December. Hyundai’s manufacturing unit in India is already functioning at peak capacity, thanks to the ever growing demand for their more profitable products like the Elite i20 and the i10. Eventually, it had to be the Santro that had to make way as the car maker also has lined-up quite a few new launches this year.

Although production is officially shut, the car still remains in demand and although some dealers still have stocks, they are in no hurry to sell it for discounts. Largely due to the fact that a few customers are still willing to pay a premium for a peppy, practical and reliable package. You’d hardly miss the car on the road though as many cabbies have adopted the tall-boy, and like the Padmini, expect them to run strong for a lot of years to come. Own one? Finding parts shouldn’t be a problem either as Hyundai has sold enough of these cars to make money for a long time just selling spares.

  1. I own one… It’s such a sad news. I wish that they revive the iconic name again pretty soon. Ample space, decent drive-ability,reliability,etc. all the things you look for in a hatch was there. Thank you Hyundai for such a masterpiece.!!!
