It is official! The BMW 2 Series Coupe, which is basically a coupe variant of the 1 Series, will make its public debut on October 25. The BMW Series will be to the 1 Series what the 4 Series is to the 3 Series.

This means that the BMW 2 Series coupe is slated to become the next model in the Bavarian car maker’s series of ‘even-numbered’ models. It may be noted that BMW intends has devised a new nomenclature system under which all the sedans and hatchbacks would get ‘odd numbered’ Series names and all the coupes, convertibles and gran coupes will get ‘even numbered’ Series names.

As is obvious, the 2 Series Coupe will borrow its underpinnings from the 1 series hatchback and it is being said that the upcoming coupe, which will be based on the not-so-visually-appealing sedan, would look a lot more sporty and classier. The BMW 2 Series coupe will go on sale in three engine variants- 218i, 225i and 220d.

Powering the 228i, which will be the entry level variant, will be a 2.0 litres turbocharged petrol engine that has a max power of 240 bhp. Powering the 220d, the sole diesel engine variant, will be a 2.0 litre turbocharged oil burner  that has a max power of 181 bhp.

The 2 Series will also get a M performance variant at a later stage. This variant will be called as the M235i and could be launched in late 2014. Powering the M235i will be a 3.0 litres turbocharged 6 cylinder engine that has a max power of 320 bhp. The same engine will deliver a higher power output of 350 bhp for the M2. It is believed that the M2 will be sufficiently potent to hit 100 kmph from standstill in a scant 4.6 seconds. The M235i is expected to have a 0-100 kmph sprint of 4.9 seconds.
