Mahindra and Mahindra takes over BSA

Confirmed: A Retro Styled, Modern BSA Motorcycle Is In The Works

Chairman of the Mahindra & Mahindra Group, Mr Anand Mahindra has confirmed by the means of a tweet that an all-new BSA Motorcycle is in the works. On Christmas day, Mr Mahindra tweeted a picture of an old poster, where to deliver the goods and get around quicker, Santa rides a BSA after retiring his Reindeer and selling his sleigh. The apologetic text of the tweet mentions that BSA’s new owners are working on a shiny new motorcycle which will be modern but still retain the character of what makes machines like a BSA unique.

Mahindra had recently acquired BSA, along with another legendary brand Jawa in order to resuscitate old legends. And why not, because the casual motorcycling market has been booming throughout the world, where bike makers like Royal Enfield who dish out retro-styled machines have been making a killing. The exact details on when the first new BSA-branded motorcycle will be launched in India is still unknown. Whether it will be a single or a twin can be anybody’s guess, but the first new bike under brand BSA is expected to arrive sometime in 2019. When it does, it will go against products from RE’s stable, who is the current market leader in that segment. By the time BSA come out with their first new bike, RE will have already expanded their portfolio with at least 4 motorcycles based on the new 650cc parallel-twin motor.

Mahindra & Mahindra’s two-wheeler business did not take off to the start that the Company had expected but the coming times could change the scenario. In October 2016, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) revealed its future strategy for the two-wheeler segment. The Indian brand plans to refocus its two-wheeler business and aims to target premium niche segments. Mahindra & Mahindra wants to co-create a lifestyle mobility company with exciting and relevant partners across products & services, and enter into previously untapped segments using brands like BSA and JAWA.
