Avdumber Hede clinched a brilliant pole position to break championship leader Ameya Walavalkar’s string of 4 consecutive poles in Race 1 of Round 5 of the JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo R Cup 2012 at the MMRT in Chennai. Goa based Avdumber, currently standing 3rd in the championship, set the quickest time of 2:00:171 seconds and will be joined on the front row by Ameya Walavalkar, who finished 0.160 seconds behind the leader. Saurav Bandyopadhay and Mexican driver, Deigo Duez, will start in 3rd and 4th positions respectively, and are separated by just 0.108 seconds from each other.
Round 5 of the Volkswagen Polo R Cup 2012 has a promising line-up of guest drivers on the grid. The Polo R Cup championship drivers will be challenged by Armaan Ebrahim, former GP2 and A1 GP driver and currently driving in the Indy Lights series; Vishnu Prasad, reigning Polo R Cup Champion; Akhil Khushlani, JK Racing Asia Series driver who recently finished on podium at Silverstone last month and Ameya Bafna, JK Tyre FMSCI National Rotax Max Karting Champion.
After clinching pole, Avdumber said, “I am thrilled to be on pole as I have been getting closer and closer to Ameya. Today the lap was perfect and I will have to make sure that I capitalize on it to be in a strong position for the race tomorrow. I have been working a lot on my data to find that extra speed and I am glad I found it today. Tomorrow will be a tough race with Ameya right behind me but I am confident of a good result.”
Starting second on the grid, Ameya said, “I am happy to be starting on the front row after a good qualifying session. I could have gone faster but made a few errors so I have to settle for the 2nd position. The start will be crucial tomorrow so I will have to make sure that I get off the line quickly without making any mistakes.”
Prithviraj Siddappa, Head of Volkswagen Motorsports India, said, “Another great qualifying session by all the drivers and congratulations to Avdumber on his pole position. This is a special round for us with drivers from national and international racing series as guest drivers. To have Armaan, Akhil, Vishnu and Ameya (Bafna) participate this weekend is great news for all the fans and the other drivers too. Both races promise to be very exciting and we are looking forward to an action packed Sunday.”
