We reported in detail when it emerged that popular German premium car maker Audi might be busy with the development of a diesel hybrid supercar. The diesel hybrid high performance car will be loosely based on the Audi R18, the winner of 24 hours of Le Mans.

Autocar.co.uk informs that the upcoming diesel hybrid hyerpcar would have at least 600 bhp of power. The engine might be a re-tuned version of the carmaker’s 3.0 litre TDI V6 engine. The engine will transmit power to the rear wheels and would develop a power figure that would be in vicinity of 420 bhp. Driving the front wheels will be a couple brushless electric motors mounted in the front axles. These motors will offer a combined power output of around 190bhp.The engine will be mated to a dual clutch transmission and Quattro all wheel drive system.

The new Audi diesel hybrid hypercar would sport a carbon fiber chassis that would help with keeping the weight under check. The car will borrow a lot of design cues from the Audi R18.

Speaking of a diesel hybrid hypercar, Wolfgang Dürheimer, head of R&D said: “We run product evaluation on different ideas, looking at market positioning, brand image, development cost and time to market. Once this is done we will have a clear decision on what happens next. I would expect an update at the Frankfurt motor show.”
