New Ducati Scrambler Sixty2 (30)

Ducati has extended its Scrambler family with two new variants jeweling up the product portfolio for 2016 –  the Scrambler Sixty2 and the Scrambler Flat Track Pro. The Italian marque targets a wider audience base with the new Scrambler Sixty2 by extending the range on offer from the new Ducati brand and opening the way for a new two-wheel segment that meets the requirements of those seeking an accessible bike. The aim is to provide easy to handle motorcycle at a low running costs without missing out on the unique Scrambler spirit. So while the Ducati Scrambler 800 is aimed at motorcyclists that see riding as a form of escapism, the Sixty2 has been built to appeal younger riders and is targeted to A2 license holders in the European market.

Before we get started about the motorcycle, here is the reason behind the nomenclature of this all new Scrambler from Ducati, the Sixty2. The Ducati Scrambler Sixty2 is inspired by youth street culture, skateboards, street food, pop music and the pop art that, back in the 1960’s, was taking the United States by storm. It was also the time, 1962 to be precise, when very first Ducati Scrambler was launched. While the Sixty2 is undeniably carries forward the Ducati Scrambler genes, what distinguishes it from the bigger 803cc Scrambler is a slim steel tank with dedicated graphics and logos. Add to that a new range of three exclusive – Atomic Tangerine, Ocean Grey and Shining Black – and the Sixty2 easily characterizes itself from its elder siblings.

The headlight, with glass parabola and LED lightguide around the perimeter and the LED rear light is similar to other Scrambler versions. The Showa 41 mm traditional stanchion fork are aimed to lower the production cost to keep the prices competitive. A Kayaba monoshock with adjustable spring preload sits at the rear while both suspensions provide 150 mm of wheel travel. Clear glass blinkers accompany the headlight while a compact single-piece instrument cluster with a round assembly, instead of the centre, sits on the right hand side of the illumination unit. More on the instrument cluster later.

The 14 litre fuel tank is another noticeable element on the motorcycle. The 80s-style logo that sits on the fuel tank draws its inspiration from motocross and BMX old school culture – the source of the stars icon. The logo features 4 stars that represent the 400 cc engine. The filler cap, which bears the inscription “born free – 1962”, reflects the closure system in vogue in the 70s while the cross-spoked alloy wheels take their cue from the world of Flat Track racing. The overall design remains minimalist exposing the heart of the Scrambler Sixty2. The exhaust pipe layout too is designed to enable a less hindered view of the Ducati twin-cylinder engine. The silencer gets a matt black cover.

Propeling this new Ducati is an air-cooled 399 cc L-twin engine. Derived from the engine on the Scrambler Icon, the unit on the Sixty2 has a 72 mm bore and a 49 mm stroke that churn out 41 hp of power at 8,750 rpm and 34.3 Nm of torque at 7,750 rpm. The gearbox is a 6-speed unit while the cable-actuated clutch emphasises the minimalist nature of the Ducati Scrambler. The twin-cylinder Scrambler Sixty2 is Euro 4 type-approved.

The Desmodue engine on the Ducati Scrambler is said to us light, machine-finished aluminium covers, including those on the clutch and alternator. As on the larger-engined version, the L-twin on the Scrambler Sixty2 features a single 50 mm throttle body with two sub-butterfly injectors thus ensuring fluid power delivery and accurate control of the fuel being aspirated into the cylinders.

The 2-in-1 exhaust with aluminium-covered silencer has been specially designed for the Ducati Scrambler Sixty2 with the pipes offering a ‘low-slung’ look. The new Scrambler Sixty2 is designed to be simple and accessible and thus features a 12,000 km maintenance intervals.

Coming back to the instrument cluster, the unit on the new Scrambler Sixty2 is completely digital and the scale on the rpm indicator, positioned in the lower part of the instrument assembly, resembles the speedometer on the bikes of the 70s. The digits light up clockwise (right to left) as engine revs higher. The compact instrument cluster on this new Ducati Scrambler also features two trip odometers and one total mileage odometer, a trip fuel indicator, an air temperature display, maintenance reminders, a clock, fuel reserve and ABS warning lights. Riders can also count on an engine oil pressure warning light, full beam indicator, neutral indicator, turn signal indicators, immobilizer and over-rev warning light.

The wide handlebars house a classic, wire-connected, twist-grip throttle together with an axial-pump front brake lever. The switchgear is characterised by the now-standard “trigger catch” that slides down to cover the starter button when the kill switch is activated -it’s the same one used on all Ducati bikes. The black painted die cast aluminium footrest plates support the gear change lever and the off-road type rear brake lever.

The entire motorcycle is built around a twin upper spar steel Trellis frame. The Ducati Scrambler frame embraces the engine and extends beneath the seat. A 24° of rake and 112 mm of trail is claimed to offer better handling both in city traffic and on hairpins. The Scrambler Sixty2 features an all-new steel Trellis swingarm.

All new aluminium 10-spoke wheels come as standard on the Ducati Scrambler. The 3″ x 18″ front wheel and the rear 4.5″ x 17″ have been designed to be light. The wheels come wrapped in the new enduro-type Pirelli MT60 RS 110/80 R18 tyre at the front and the 160/60 R17 at the rear, featuring a chunky tread pattern. These tyres are produced exclusively for the Ducati Scrambler.

Adding to the rider’s confidence is the Brembo braking system. The Scrambler Sixty2 comes with a single 320 mm disc with a 2-piston floating caliper at the front and a 245 mm disc with 32mm piston caliper at the rear. Further enhancing the braking is the Bosch 9.1 MP ABS system with an internal pressure sensor.
