Andere OPAC CONTENDER XG

Status & Class Contender XG, is this Swiss creation the BMW X6’s forefather?

CONTENDER XG

The Style & Class Contender XG, an X6 that isn’t a BMW.

Before the Bavarians came along with their fancy X6 Sports Activity Coupé (SAC), one company already began producing such SUV cum Coupé vehicles. Oh and when we say “began producing”, we mean less than 5 examples. That’s right, there were only 5 or less Contender XGs produced. The production lasted between 1996 and 1999, two decades before the first BMW X6!

Looks like someone got confused on what colour this one should be. The shade looks ghastly.

The origin of this car is just as interesting as its design. The Status & Class Contender XG was built in Italy, for a Swiss-based company and has the underbody from a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, which is German. So the Contender XG was basically a joint-venture between the Italians, Germans and the Swiss. Talking of a joint-venture and the Germans, this car’s 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder motor was directly sourced from Mercedes-Benz. It produces 208 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. This healthy dose of power and torque is channeled to all four wheels, which are quite big in the XG.

This motor was sourced from Mercedes-Benz, but the purple cowling? Surely not.

This SUV-Coupé mingle-mangle of a thing isn’t particularly large or any better looking than a modern-day X6. That said, it stretches almost 4.4-metres in length, almost 1.7-metres in height and is nearly 2-metres in width, which is what we call, WIDE. And do you see an SLK Merc in its exterior design or is it just us? And apparently, this “suave” machine has a top speed of over 200 km/h.

CONTENDER XG-2

Gorgeous or macho, neither are words we would use for the aesthetics of this car.

Find the BMW X6 too common and want something a bit more quirky? Well, get yourself to write a cheque for almost $120,000 and get one of these. You’d certainly annoy the Bavarians by driving this around. Also, you’d own one of the rarest cars in existence. That is of course, if you can find a Contender XG. As a bonus, we have attached a video clip for you to look at. Do let us know what you think of this wacky car in the comments section.
