For many Indian families, the first car is not just a car. It has to fit into a tight parking space, handle daily traffic, offer good mileage and still feel like a proper SUV. The Tata Punch seems to have found that balance for a huge number of buyers. Tata Motors has now sold more than 8 lakh Punch models in India in less than five years.
Launched in October 2021, the Punch has become one of Tata Motors’ strongest-selling passenger cars. It has also earned the title of the fastest SUV in India to reach the 8 lakh sales mark.
Punch Sales Keep Growing
The latest sales numbers show how strong the demand has been. Between August 2025 and July 2026, Tata sold 2,18,754 units of the Punch, including the Punch EV. That is 47,788 units more than the same period a year earlier.
| Period | Punch Sales |
|---|---|
| August 2025-July 2026 | 2,18,754 units |
| Previous 12-month period | 1,70,966 units |
| Year-on-year growth | 27.95% |
| Total sales | Over 8 lakh |
July 2026 was particularly strong for the Punch. Tata sold 21,313 units during the month, making it the company’s best-selling passenger vehicle. It was also the fifth best-selling car in India for the month.
The Punch crossed the 20,000-unit mark in March, May, June and July this year.
Petrol, CNG And Electric Options
A big part of the Punch story is the number of choices available to buyers. The SUV can be bought with petrol, CNG or electric power.
The petrol range includes the regular 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine and a new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. The turbo version produces 120bhp and 170Nm and comes with a six-speed manual gearbox.
The CNG version uses Tata’s twin-cylinder setup and is also available with an AMT gearbox. This makes the Punch the first SUV in India to offer a CNG-AMT combination.
The Punch EV gives buyers another option with two battery choices.
Punch Gets More Features
Tata has also kept adding equipment to the Punch. The updated petrol model gets a sharper design and several new cabin features.
Key equipment includes:
- 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- 7-inch digital instrument cluster
- Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
- Wireless charging
- 360-degree camera
- Cruise control
- Rain-sensing wipers
- Air purifier
- Eight-speaker audio system
- Touch-based climate controls
The Punch EV gets dual 10.25-inch screens, connected car technology, wireless charging, ventilated front seats and a 360-degree camera on higher variants.
Punch EV Gets Bigger Battery
The electric version received a major update this year with a new 40kWh battery pack. It offers an ARAI-certified range of 468km.
The larger battery supports 65kW DC fast charging. Tata says the battery can charge from 20 to 80 per cent in 26 minutes. It also gets a lifetime battery warranty.
The Punch EV is priced from Rs 9.69 lakh to Rs 12.79 lakh, ex-showroom. With Tata’s Battery-as-a-Service option, the starting price comes down to Rs 6.49 lakh, with battery charges starting at Rs 2.5 per km.
The petrol Punch is priced between Rs 5.70 lakh and Rs 10.67 lakh, ex-showroom.
A Strong Tata Bestseller
The 8 lakh sales figure shows how widely the Punch has been accepted in India. Its small size, SUV design, safety package, several engine choices and electric option have helped it appeal to different types of buyers.
