The next-generation VW Polo is out the bag. Caught undisguised in South Africa, these prototypes of the German hatchback reveal all but the interiors before its scheduled world premiere at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The 2017 VW Polo is based on the brand’s MQB A0 platform. It features all-new styling, all-new interiors and a range of updated engines. The styling is in line with VW’s new design philosophy, and might take some time to sink in if you’re in favor of the current model’s timeless style. It will be longer and wider than before, thus generating more interior space.

The interiors, although not revealed yet, will benefit from new technologies like a fully digital instrument cluster, a new infotainment system with a large touchscreen and the Park Pilot parking assistant. It is also said to feature a soft-touch dashboard and a range of new active safety systems.

The 2017 VW Polo will employ a range of updated engines. Headlining the new engine range will be a new 1.5-liter TSI petrol unit  in two states of tune – 128 HP & 148 HP-  that will replace the current 1.4-liter TSI engine. Entry-level versions are expected to get a 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol engine in three states of tune, while diesel power is likely to be taken care of by an updated 1.6-liter TDI engine.

That’s the 2017 VW Touareg right there.

As for the hot 2017 VW Polo GTI, it is also expected to get a bump in power, with as much as 200 HP from a new 2.0-liter TSI engine. Transmission options will include 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions, with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission equipped in the higher-spec models. The 2017 VW Polo may or may not come to India, as Volkswagen India isn’t very keen on manufacturing the MQB A0 platform in the country.
