Yamaha 250 for India to be based on the FZ16

Yamaha Motor India has been readying a face lifted version of its very capable and very successful YZF-R15. After the reports of the new version launching in January fizzled out, we’ve been expecting some official word on the launch as a refresh is inevitable, sooner or later.

As a new development Autocar India reports that apart from the new R15, the company is also readying its contender in the 250cc segment. The new 250, to be launched in the streetfighter guise will be based on the FZ16 platform. Engine powering the new bike would be a single cylinder, four stroke mill. Estimated price would be around Rs 1,30,000 which hints that this engine won’t be a very sophisticated unit. Liquid cooling sounds difficult at that price point, so our money is on an air-cooled unit. Although if Yamaha could provide liquid cooling at that price point, nothing like it!

ACI further reports that the new R15 will sport fatter tyres, step seat, new 10spoke alloys (seen on the spy pics) and a new position for the number plate. The price of the bike will also be brought down by about Rs 10,000.
