Volkswagen could launch a sub 4 metre compact sedan in India

It has emerged that the Indian subsidiary of German auto maker, Volkswagen, could soon launch a compact sedan in our country. It is no secret that the compact sedan segment is easily among the most emerging segments of our car industry and hence, it comes across as no surprise that VW India might soon take a plunge into the fast heating up compact sedan market. Such is the popularity of compact sedans in India that the Maruti Swift Dzire, which is basically a boot-ed version of the Swift, has been averaging a sales figure of around 16000 units every month, even in these times of slowdown! Even the new Honda Amaze, which is a Brio based sub 4 metres sedan, averages around 8-9000 units every month.

It is being said that Volkswagen India is so serious about getting it cent percent right with its compact sedan that it has been busy readying not one but two examples of sub 4m sedans! However, only the more promising of  these two cars would be given a thumbs up for production.

One of these two cars is a truncated version of the Vento. It is a highly known fact that the Vento is a sedan version of the Polo hatchback and hence, the Vento based compact sedan could be much like a Polo, albeit, with a slightly larger boot. However, it is being said that the VW Compact Sedan has been bogged down by design challenges, as chopping some of the boot off the Vento would lead to ‘un-deZirable’ quirkiness.

The second VW Compact Sedan could be the sedan variant of the new Up city car. The Up’s wheelbase is larger than that of the Amaze and is only a little shorter than that of the Dzire. However, it remains to be seen if VW would manage to have an interior packaging that would be as clever as that of the Amaze.Yet another possibility is that of VW deciding to build the compact sedan on the Taigun’s longer wheelbase.

While it is pretty much clear that Volkswagen India is very serious about launching a sub 4m compact sedan in India, it would be interesting to see what the Volkswagen compact sedan would be like.
