The new Yamaha R3 may not have come as a surprise for many given the fact that other Japanese two-wheeler makers had evolved their entry level performance motorcycles to the 300cc category. Two-time World Superbike Champion Colin Edwards and his wife Alyssia Edwards explain the features and utility value of the new R3 in a detailed video that is released by Yamaha. The reason for inviting Alyssia Edwards was to explain the fact that the new R3 has been designed to be more nimble and easily usable by female audience as well. The low seat height (780mm) makes the R3 more usable for short riders while the light body weight adds to the agility of the motorcycle. The KYB front and rear suspension serves good wheel travel and centralised mass for more nimble handling.

In terms of performance, the new Yamaha R3 comes with a 320cc inline two cylinder engine with downdraft fuel injection. The new engine is more powerful than the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and Honda CBR300R.

Colin Edwards says that the Yamaha R3’s new engine provides strong power and torque across the RPM range. He also adds that the 6-speed transmission has a feather light clutch feel. The light weight diamond-type frame is compact and comfortable with just the right rigidity for better handling. The 10-spoke wheel, cowling and twin headlamps give the R3 a typical R-Series Supersport look.
