Suzuki’s 4th Gen Swift Launched In Japan, India Launch in 2024

Suzuki has introduced the latest 4th Gen Swift hatchback in Japan, unveiling a range of features and insights that offer a glimpse into what the India-bound model might offer. This new generation Swift, available in three trims – XG, Hybrid MX, and Hybrid MZ, and sporting 13 colour variants, has provided significant details about its powertrain and performance.

4th Gen Swift: New Z-series Engine Debuts in Japan

At the Tokyo Motor Show, the 4th Gen Swift was showcased but its engine specifications were not available until now. The Japan-spec Swift houses a 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder petrol engine (Z12E) that generates 82hp at 5,700rpm and 108Nm at 4,500rpm. It’s paired with a CVT, and Suzuki provides a mild-hybrid option, adding 3.1hp and 60Nm from a DC synchronous motor. These configurations yield fuel efficiency figures of 23.4kpl for the standard and 24.5kpl for the mild-hybrid Swift, both tested on the WLTP cycle.

The current K12 engine in the Swift produces 90hp at 6,000rpm and 113Nm at 4,400rpm. The Z Series engines offer improved volumetric efficiency and torque compared to the K Series units. But the Z12E sacrifices the K12’s free-revving nature, focusing instead on stronger pulling power at lower rev ranges. Additionally, the Japanese Swift, like its counterpart in Japan, will also offer 4WD variants.

The India-bound Swift, slated for the second half of 2024, will share the Z12E engine. However, specific power outputs and fuel-efficiency figures for this model are currently undisclosed. While a mild-hybrid variant is anticipated at launch, the CVT gearbox isn’t expected to be available in India. Instead, the next-gen Swift is likely to continue with an AMT transmission. Paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and will be exclusively FWD.

Interior & Exterior Looks

In terms of exterior design, the new Swift showcases a revamped front and rear profile, sporting a sleeker grille. A set of updated LED headlamps with L-shaped DRLs, 16-inch alloy wheels, inverted-C-shaped LED taillights, and rear handles mounted on the doors are also part of the deal. Offering 13 colour options for the Japanese market, the choices include single-tone options like Frontier Blue, Cool Yellow, Burning Red, Flame Orange, Caravan Ivory, Pure White, Premium Silver, Star Silver, and Super Black, as well as dual-tone combinations like Frontier Blue/Black Roof, Burning Red/Black Roof, Cool Yellow/Black Roof, and Pure White/Black Roof.

Inside, the new-gen Swift receives an overhauled cabin resembling the Baleno and Fronx models. Packed with features such as a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system, connectivity via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, steering-mounted controls, rearview and 360-degree surround cameras, a suite of safety features including six airbags, and an ADAS suite, it promises a tech-savvy and comfortable driving experience.
