Production spec Koenigsegg Regera makes its debut at the Geneva Motor Show

While the Bugatti Chiron is hogging on most of the attention at the Geneva Motor Show, not far away at another stall is another hypercar that just might give the successor to the Veyron a run for its money. We are talking about the Koenigsegg Regera here, and more particularly the production ready version of the Regera.

The Regera was first unveiled at the previous edition of the Geneva Motor Show and now the Swedish manufacturer has gone ahead and unveiled the production version of the Regera at the ongoing 2016 Geneva Motor Show. According to Koenigsegg, the production version of the Regera receives over 3000 changes as compared to the concept and though we cannot elaborate on each of these, we will be focusing on the important changes on the production spec Regera.

The Regera now has a dry weight of 1470 kgs (wet weight adding an extra 120 kgs), lighter than the concept which seems to be the most significant change to the production spec model. Another important highlight of the Regera is the Koenigsegg Direct Drive (KDD) whose patent is yet pending, eliminates the need for the conventional transmission. The company has developed a clutch-slip mechanism that uses the hydraulic coupling to convert torque at medium/high speeds during fast acceleration. This allows the combustion engine to gain revs and power, thereby giving the sensation of a traditional downshift with the associated aural enjoyment, even without the traditional gearbox.

Powering this hypercar is twin turbo 5.0 litre V8 that produces 1100 hp and 1250 Nm. This engine is paired to the Koenigsegg Direct Drive as mentioned earlier. Paddle shifts, although are still present with the left paddle being used to enhance the regenerative braking effect in recharging the battery pack while the right paddle is used to activate the hydraulic coupling’s “downshift” operation. This engine is paired to 3 electric motors which produce a total power output of 697 hp and 900 Nm of torque. The combined output of both these motors stands at 1479 hp with 2000 Nm of torque.

While naught to 100 takes the Regera 2.8 seconds, 0-200 kmph comes up in 6.6 seconds and 0-400 kmph takes 20 seconds. The 0-300 kmph range takes just 10.9 seconds which is reported to beat the Chiron’s time of “less than 13.6 seconds” as the company claimed. Inside the Regera, you will find features such as an overhead monitor, front and reear view cameras, Apple CarPlay, inductive charging (wireless charging) for mobiles, WiFi, apart from heated and electrically adjustable seats.

The battle between both these hypercars just went up to another level. Whose side are you on? Who do you think will win? The latter will be answered only after a head on competition between both rivals.
