With the increasing number of vehicle population in India (It is estimated that in the next 20 years, 380 million vehicles will be on Indian roads) and heavy dependence of crude oil imports, fuel efficiencies of vehicles have always been and will remain very critical to India and Indian consumers. One of the challenges that Indian automobile manufacturers are working on is to reduce the weight of the vehicle and thereby improve the fuel efficiency while meeting the enhanced performance and the stringent emission norms.
DuPont brings rich experience to the automotive industry having associated with it for over 100 years. DuPont is inspired by the challenges involved in developing low-emission, fuel-efficient vehicles that are safe, affordable and fun to drive. DuPont is focused on innovation themes; Sustainability; Lightweight; Safety; Comfort & Design; Improved Performance; Total System Cost and Alternative Drive.
DuPont has brought a number of innovations to solve some of the challenges of the automotive manufacturers. Together with its global development team, DuPont India has been collaborating with the automotive industry in India in providing science-powered innovation through high-performance materials that provide light weighting solutions, lower emission and better performance. DuPont believes that together, we can do what no one can do alone.
DuPont recognizes that large scale adoption of light weighting technologies that significantly reduce vehicle weight will require a number of breakthroughs best achieved through collaborative efforts throughout the value chain. High performance polymers are inherently lighter than metal and DuPont has been working with the industry for years to capture the benefits of weight, integration and cost. DuPont is actively engaged with automakers who are boosting the performance of today’s smaller, more efficient engines as a means to further improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions.
As the emission norms become more and more stringent, advanced materials and technologies will play a critical role. DuPont has been working with the automotive industry to bring solutions such as ultra-low GWP refrigerant, solutions for turbo charging and other integrated design changes to meet the emission norms of tomorrow.
DuPont India has invested in two key facilities to increase its footprint to fuel local collaboration in support of India’s dynamic automotive industry.
DuPont India Innovation Center, Pune – Set up two years ago, a forward-looking initiative that acts as a collaborative platform for automotive OEMs and component & system manufacturers to come together to support the Indian automotive industry to develop automotive products and solutions that meet local needs.
Application Development Center, DuPont Knowledge Center, Hyderabad – Set up recently, primarily serves the DuPont Performance Polymers business in India, an integral part of the DuPont’s contribution to the automotive industry. The center is focused on bringing advanced material science capabilities to the automotive industry to enable solutions for light-weighting, engine performance, comfort, safety etc.
These two centers and DuPont’s global network provide an environment for the customers and partners to connect real time with a team of over 10,000 DuPont scientists and engineers located in more than 150 technical centers around the world.
Automotive is important to DuPont. Automotive is tied to two of DuPont’s three growth strategies – energy, which is focused on reducing dependence on fossil fuels and developing alternative energy sources; and safety, focused on protecting people and the environment. Two thirds of DuPont’s businesses are actively engaged with the automotive industry. And on continuing basis generates more than $3 billion sales to the auto industry.
DuPont has embraced The Power of Shunya™ as its approach to address the big challenges by using science for problem solving.
