A few months back, Piaggio installed a scooter manufacturing capacity of 15000 units per month and then, launched the all new retro look Vespa at INR 66,000 (ex-showroom). The strange development made us sure of a chord or two missing in this equation and now that the picture has become clearer, we can say that the installed capacity of 15000 units a month is not an overkill by any means. Reports have cropped up that the Italian scooter maker is planning to bring the Fly 125 to Indian market. The scoot could be launched as soon as in Diwali season this year and should come with a price tag of about INR 50,000.
Piaggio Fly 125, which is already doing duty in international markets, is a lightweight and compact scooter with a 10.5 bhp 124cc single cylinder 2-valve engine. The motor is mated to a CVT transmission and has good fuel efficiency.
The Piaggio Fly 125 is equipped with a set of telescopic hydraulic shock absorber upfront and twin hydraulic shock absorbers with preload adjuster at the rear. The scooter rides on 12 inch wheels with tubeless tyres. Anchoring duties are courtesy a 200 mm disc and 140mm drum brake for front and rear respectively.
The new Vespa has gained a lot of publicity and have grabbed a lot of eyeballs. However, owing to the high price tag, the sales performance of this lifestyle offering is nothing to write home about. All this is looks ready to change with the introduction of Fly 125, which will be an international offering at a realistic price point.
